This workshop is open to anyone who has an interest in Japanese calligraphy. Attendees of the May calligraphy workshop are also encouraged to attend.
Japanese calligraphy is a majestic form of artistic writing. The beauty and wonder of Japanese calligraphy lies in its painstaking attention to detail. Like a sculptor’s hammer and chisel, the calligrapher must use brush and ink to create characters that convey linguistic meaning and stylized expression.
In this workshop, you will learn the basics of Japanese calligraphy. Whether you are fluent in Japanese, or know just a handful of characters, the class will start from the very beginning. You will learn proper brush and ink dipping techniques, and will learn how to write Japanese characters for words such as summer, festival and fireworks. The goal of the workshop, is to expose yourself to the fundamental techniques of Japanese calligraphy, so that you may find your own unique style and means of artistic expression.
At the conclusion of the workshop, you will have an opportunity to create a finished piece of work on a Japanese paper fan in celebration of the Tanabata (Star Festival). This is a perfect summer keepsake.
